The season of giving: why skills-based volunteering matters

As the calendar turns to the last months of the year, the holiday season brings with it a palpable spirit of generosity and giving. It's a time when individuals and organizations rally to make a difference, culminating in GivingTuesday—a global movement that channels the season's goodwill into tangible action for nonprofits around the world. But for nonprofits, this isn't just a season of joy; it's a time of immense pressure. From executing end-of-year fundraising campaigns to preparing budgets and operational plans for 2025, their workloads soar.

That's where skills-based volunteering comes in. During this crucial season, offering expertise rather than just time can make a profound impact. Skills-based volunteers serve as a lifeline for nonprofits, providing critical staffing support that ensures resilience and sustainability. Whether it's helping refine a donor database, crafting a compelling social media campaign, or conducting a financial analysis, skills-based volunteer opportunities directly address the operational and strategic needs of nonprofits when they need it most.

Why giving season is critical for nonprofits

For nonprofits, the last quarter of the year is make-or-break time. End-of-year giving accounts for a significant portion of their annual revenue. Many nonprofits rely on the majority of their donations to come in during December, with GivingTuesday acting as a pivotal moment to engage donors. To capitalize on this opportunity, nonprofits need to execute flawless fundraising campaigns, optimize donor outreach, and ensure their back-end operations are primed for success.

But here’s the challenge: many nonprofits operate with limited staff and resources, especially smaller organizations. The demands of creating impactful campaigns, managing holiday-season programming, and preparing for 2025 can stretch their teams to the brink. This is where skills-based volunteering makes a measurable difference. Volunteers with professional expertise provide the nonprofit equivalent of "staff augmentation," filling gaps in skills and capacity that would otherwise go unmet.

Staff burnout is a real issue in the nonprofit world, especially during the holiday rush. The average nonprofit staff member juggles multiple roles, leaving little time for innovation or long-term planning. Without adequate support, even the best organizations can struggle to meet their goals, jeopardizing their ability to serve their communities effectively. Skills-based volunteers alleviate this burden, acting as an extension of the nonprofit team.

By tapping into skills-based volunteer software like Catchafire, nonprofits can quickly connect with professionals who are eager to give back. These platforms make it easy for organizations to find the right match for their needs, whether they’re looking for a graphic designer, data analyst, or grant writer. This streamlined process ensures nonprofits get timely, impactful support.

The benefits of skills-based volunteering during the holidays

While general volunteerism—like serving meals or wrapping gifts—has its value, skills-based volunteering brings a unique set of benefits. Skills-based volunteer opportunities are crucial during the season of giving:

Take a bit of the workload off nonprofits

Nonprofits depend on resilient systems to weather challenges and grow. Skills-based volunteers can audit financials, streamline processes, or design scalable IT systems that leave nonprofits stronger than they were before. For example, a volunteer financial analyst could help prepare a nonprofit's 2025 budget, ensuring accuracy and identifying areas for cost savings.

Help with critical needs

With year-end deadlines looming, nonprofits don’t always have the bandwidth to optimize operations. Skills-based volunteers can step in to assist with donor database cleanup, grant proposal reviews, or CRM system upgrades—helping nonprofits hit their goals efficiently.

See them reach more people

From GivingTuesday campaigns to year-end appeals, nonprofits need polished communication strategies to stand out. Skills-based volunteers with marketing expertise can craft impactful email campaigns, optimize social media efforts, and even design visuals or videos that captivate donors and spur action.

Get a headstart on next year

Beyond the immediate needs of the holiday season, skills-based volunteering sets nonprofits up for success in the new year. Strategic planning, fundraising roadmaps, and operational audits are just a few examples of how this kind of support helps nonprofits move forward with confidence.

Volunteer highlight: Meet Pabitra

Among the 100,000+ volunteers giving back on Catchafire, one individual stands out this month. We spoke with Pabitra, our Volunteer of the Month, about his skills-based volunteering experience. Since his first project in 2019, Pabitra has gone on to complete 603 additional projects. This critical staffing support is valued at close to $2 million in impact, providing nonprofits with the infrastructure and skills they need to support their missions.

“Excellent experience till now! I have worked for hundreds of admirable, inspiring people. I cannot imagine any other way I could have done that.”

Pabitra C., Volunteer of the Month

In a few sentences, tell us more about yourself and your background.

I am a fulltime volunteer copywriter. I think the most useful thing I can do for a nonprofit is bring in a fresh pair of eyes. That stems from my experiences in advertising, direct marketing, and academic research.

Why and how did you begin volunteering on Catchafire?

I was looking for a service that connects nonprofits to volunteers. I uploaded my profile in a few minutes.

What has been your most impactful or memorable experience on Catchafire?

For me, the important thing is that a project should go smoothly. Almost all projects have. That is sufficient.

What has been your biggest takeaway from your experience on Catchafire? How has this impacted/influenced your life and career goals?

To horribly translate a song by Hindi lyricist Anand Bakshi, “There are so many woes in the world, my woes are so few, when I saw the world’s woes, I forgot my own.” I do not claim to have overcome my many failures and disasters, but they are trivial compared to other issues.

What motivates you to take on multiple projects with the same organization? How does this ongoing commitment enhance your experience and impact?

If an organization asks me again, I am most honored to work for them. That is motivating enough.

What advice would you give to volunteers about starting their first Catchafire project?

Here is something I find helpful: ask the nonprofit to send you as much information about them as they are okay with showing an outsider and which you will not find online. If they are scared about “information overload,” point out you do not have to read everything they send.
