Mom Your Business, a nonprofit dedicated to empowering Black and Brown women entrepreneurs, faced a significant dilemma: they didn’t have a fundraising problem; they had a storytelling problem. They needed to effectively communicate their incredible impact to funders and supporters. By partnering with Catchafire, Mom Your Business connected with a skilled graphic designer who created powerful annual impact reports. This collaboration not only solved their storytelling challenge but also secured crucial donor funding and generated $16,526 in savings across seven pro bono projects, empowering them to amplify their community impact.

The challenge: A storytelling deficit

Mom Your Business has a tremendous impact, running large-scale events and providing essential tools, resources, and capital to entrepreneurs. However, the organization struggled to translate its success into a compelling narrative that could be shared with funders, partners, and the community. As President Tanya M. explained, the core issue wasn't a lack of funds but a "storytelling problem." Without a professional way to showcase their achievements, they risked missing opportunities to secure the support needed to continue their vital work. They had a great year of programming, but needed a way to share that success to fuel future initiatives.

The solution: Finding the right skills on Catchafire

To bridge this gap, Mom Your Business turned to Catchafire to find pro bono talent. They were matched with Nigel C., a skilled graphic designer, to create their first-ever annual impact report. The goal was to develop a visually compelling document that showcases their work and resonates with their audience. The partnership was so successful that they collaborated with Nigel again the following year to produce their next impact report, building a consistent and powerful storytelling tool. These projects represented a critical investment in their fundraising and communications capacity.

A seamless and visionary collaboration

The process of working with Nigel through Catchafire was seamless and effective. From the very first project, Nigel quickly grasped the organization's vision. "We had one meeting and he totally captured our vision for the impact report and communicated it perfectly," said Tanya. Nigel’s expertise in information design and his thorough approach ensured that every visual and data point was perfectly aligned with the organization's mission.

For the second report, the established relationship made the process even smoother. Tanya noted, "He captures our vision, is very thorough in checking the numbers and the content to ensure they align and make sense. I enjoy working with him." This consistent partnership allowed Mom Your Business to build on their success and produce high-quality, professional reports year after year.

The results: Unlocking potential and driving growth

The collaboration with Nigel yielded immediate and tangible results. The professionally designed impact reports became a cornerstone of their fundraising efforts, providing the clear, data-backed narrative they needed to engage supporters. These reports were instrumental in helping them secure donor checks, which provided the necessary funding for their 2025 events and ongoing programming.

Beyond the direct fundraising impact, the partnership delivered significant cost savings. Across seven projects on Catchafire, Mom Your Business saved $16,526. The two impact report projects alone saved $9,634 in costs, allowing the organization to channel those resources directly back into its mission of empowering women entrepreneurs.

Conclusion: Amplifying impact through strategic partnership

The success of Mom Your Business demonstrates how connecting with the right skilled volunteer can solve critical capacity challenges and unlock new opportunities for growth. By leveraging Catchafire, they transformed a storytelling problem into a powerful fundraising asset. This partnership not only saved the organization thousands of dollars but, more importantly, it empowered them to share their story with the world, secure vital funding, and continue their mission to help Black and Brown women entrepreneurs achieve social and economic success. It is a powerful example of how going "beyond the grant" with capacity-building resources can create sustainable community impact.
