Great Article! Another solution is something like www.benefacting.org, where you can get people to make donations in exchange for your services (or stuff). That way the cause you want to support doesn't have to need your specific skill, you can find anybody who needs it and have them make a cash donation.

Quick video explanation: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_pp4NVPwaUw

Full disclosure: I'm one of the co-founders of Benefacting.

Hi Kevin,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. You're absolutely right that real estate on the resume is precious. Being concise and listing only relevant experience is important. That said, many volunteer opportunities call for highly skilled professionals where they can apply their technical skills and gain relevant experience.

Likewise, for professional who happen to be unemployed, it's a way for them to show prospective employers that they're continuing to work and develop their skills while they job hunt.

This is in part why we're so excited about the new "Volunteer Experience and Causes" section, if they don't have the space on the resume to list volunteer experiences, they can do so on their LinkedIn profile.

I've been taught that everything on a resume should be relevant to job objective. I have a hard time seeing how volunteer work is relevant to many jobs. Real estate on a resume is precious enough. As a hiring manager, I might want to know about volunteer work to round out someone's character profile, but in initial screenings I would think that resumes that sacrifice hard skills and directly relevant accomplishments for volunteer work might suffer.
